Traffic Management Operative
I joined A-Plant about 18 months ago. I used to be a taxi driver, but I wanted a regular income. In some respects, this job is quite similar. I still have lots of freedom and I travel a lot. The area we cover spans from Liverpool to Barrow-in-Furness, so I’m always moving around to different places.
I put up and maintain temporary roadworks at sites, which means I’m outside a lot! I really like the variety – sometimes I spend two or three months on a site, whereas other times I’ll just be there for a day. There’s a lot of responsibility involved – we’re liable if there’s an accident. So we have a lot of training before we’re allowed to work on the road.
It was my best mate who suggested I join A-Plant. And a bit later, I recommended them to my stepbrother, too. He also joined us as a Traffic Management Operative, so I had to train him up. Giving him orders was a bit weird, because he’s two years older than me! I want to stay here for as long as they’ll have me – I really like the company and the people I work with. I want to progress as high as I can go - there’s so much more I can learn at A-Plant!
